China Urges Middle East Nations to Build Shared Security Framework

(MENAFN) China on Wednesday urged countries across the Middle East to establish a new regional framework aimed at achieving common, comprehensive and sustainable security amid rising tensions.

“It is our hope that regional countries will uphold the principles of mutual respect and good-neighborliness, jointly create a new regional architecture for common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and realize lasting peace in the region,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said during a news conference.

Mao noted that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had recently held separate meetings in Beijing with national security officials from Saudi Arabia and Iran. The discussions focused on developments across the Middle East and Gulf region.

She stressed that stability in the region has implications extending beyond its borders, saying it “bears on not only the well-being of countries and people in the region, but also international energy supply and world peace and security.”

China is prepared to expand communication and diplomatic engagement with Saudi Arabia, Iran and other regional countries as tensions continue to escalate, Mao added.

“The pressing priority is to avoid resumption of conflicts in the Middle East, which will inflict great suffering on the people in the region,” she said.

Mao also outlined Beijing’s position on several regional issues, saying China would “uphold an objective and fair position, support Iran and the U.S. in resolving disputes through negotiations, promote the political settlement of the Yemen issue, and facilitate efforts to seek a proper and comprehensive settlement on the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.”

The Chinese appeal comes amid tensions following US and Israeli military strikes against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with attacks targeting Israel and US assets across the region before a ceasefire was reached in April.

Washington and Tehran subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 concerning freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. However, disagreements over security arrangements have prevented the agreement from being fully implemented.
