Iran Stresses FIFA World Cup Visa Obligations for National Team

(MENAFN) Iran’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that the United States, as the organizer of the FIFA World Cup, is required to grant visas to Iran’s national football squad despite the longstanding political tensions between the two nations.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Wednesday evening that Tehran is making “every possible effort” to prevent any complications for the Iranian team during its World Cup appearance in the US.

“Our players will travel to the United States solely for the World Cup,” Baghaei remarked after an internal practice match, according to a news agency.

He further noted that the host nation of the tournament carries “a clear and specific commitment that it is obliged to uphold,” underlining that visas should be provided to Iranian team members “without considering political issues.”

Baghaei also voiced optimism that FIFA would adopt the appropriate actions “to preserve its credibility,” adding that the recent incidents involving Iran’s national team were “not worthy of FIFA.”

He explained that Iran intends to use “all available capacities” to ease procedures connected to the team’s participation in the global competition.

Addressing the lack of formal diplomatic ties between Tehran and Washington, Baghaei said Iran’s Interests Section in the US capital is completely ready to offer the required support and coordination.

When questioned about possible negotiations, Baghaei refrained from elaborating, stating: “For now, we are focused on sports.”
