Thailand Says US Provides No Direct Support Amid Iran War Economic Impact

(MENAFN) Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has said that Washington has not provided any direct assistance to Bangkok as the country faces economic strain linked to the ongoing war involving Iran, according to a report.

In an interview published on the weekend, Sihasak said that officials in US President Donald Trump’s administration appear to understand the wider consequences of the conflict, but have not engaged Thailand on possible support measures.

“But they haven’t come out to talk to us about how they can help. They haven’t approached us directly saying, ‘Oh, we understand that you have to endure the impact, and we can help you out,’” Sihasak said.

He noted that the only related signal from Washington was Trump’s suggestion that countries facing energy pressures should consider purchasing American oil and gas. During a recent prime-time address, Trump said: “Buy oil from the United States of America,” adding: “We have plenty.”

Sihasak also said Thailand believes the conflict itself should have been avoided, stating: “this war should not have taken place in the first place.”

He added that Bangkok is cautious about its diplomatic tone, saying: “We don’t want to condemn the US directly. But this is something that should not have started.”
