Iran Pursues Nuclear Talks with US, Trump Claims

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump disclosed Sunday that Iranian officials have contacted Washington to pursue potential negotiations on the nation's nuclear program, suggesting a diplomatic breakthrough amid escalating tensions.

While speaking with reporters on Air Force One during his flight from Florida to Washington, DC, Trump revealed that Iranian authorities initiated contact Saturday requesting dialogue.

"They called yesterday. Iran called to negotiate yesterday," he said.

Trump characterized the outreach as evidence of Tehran's exhaustion with sustained US pressure. "I think they're tired of being beat up by the United States. Iran wants to negotiate."

The president indicated a meeting is being organized, though he warned that rapidly evolving circumstances could compel American action before any diplomatic engagement occurs.

"We may meet with them, he said.

"I mean, a meeting is being set up, but we may have to act, because of what's happening, before the meeting. But, a meeting is being set up. Iran called. They want to negotiate."

Iran has experienced widespread unrest since late December, triggered by its currency's steep decline and deteriorating economic circumstances.

Trump stated his administration is carefully tracking developments in Iran and evaluating "very strong options" as casualty figures from ongoing demonstrations reportedly climb.

"The military is looking at it, and we're looking at some very strong options. We'll make a determination," he said.
