Iran declares three days of mourning to honor victims of deadly riots

(MENAFN) Iran announces three days of national mourning to commemorate those killed during widespread riots, describing the turmoil as a “battle” against the United States and Israel.

The protests, considered the most severe in recent years, began in late December after the sharp collapse of the rial and worsening economic hardships under heavy sanctions. Demonstrations quickly spread across multiple cities, where fires and violent clashes led to fatalities among both security forces and civilians, according to reports. Some accounts suggest the death toll reaches into the hundreds, while state outlets cite figures in the dozens, including members of the security forces.

Government officials declared, “The Iranian nation has experienced firsthand how the urban terrorist criminals committed ISIS-like violence. To this day, such violence has not been seen except in the behavior of the American-trained ISIS.”

On Sunday, President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States and Israel of fueling the unrest. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reinforced the allegation, releasing a disturbing video that depicts crowds assaulting police officers, killing them, and setting their bodies ablaze.
